I am doing NaNoWriMo this year – National Novel Writing Month. This is a world wide writing challenge with over 300,000 writers participating. Some register with the site and make it official and others take on the challenge privately or with a local group of authors. The challenge is to write 50,000 words in 30 days during the month of November.
I started off really well at the first of the month. My daily word counts were above the average. This continued for the first two and a half weeks and I was feeling really good. If I continued that pace I should have my 50,000 words by the end of week three at the latest. Yeah me!
Then on the thrid week I slacked off the first couple of days but caught up mid week. Then life got in the way again and I didn’t write for a few days. Now I have to make up a lot of words before the end of the month. Not an impossible feat but one that will take some discipline on my part to achieve.
My personal nano goals were to write 2 more volumes in my short stories series. I had topics all lined up and in a file folder on my computer. Expecting that I was going to have a good month I lined up three volumes of topics so that I would ensure there was enough to keep me going and to give me choices should a story or two not be working out so well.
With the stores and radio stations starting their Christmas advertising my mind started wondering to that subject so I added a Christmas volume to my NaNoWriMo file folder. The stories were fighting to get out of my mind and on to the page. Of course this volume will not be released until the Christmas season next year, but now I will be ahead of the game right? The truth is they were driving me crazy and if I did not take the time to get them out of my brain and on to the page I would never have been able to move on and finish the other stories.
I’ve written the stories for one volume. A couple of stories in the second volume and a story and a half in the Christmas volume. Things are not so bad, and even if I don’t make the 50,000 goal I have well over half of that number of words written which is still a great accomplishment.
Well I am off to add some more words to my count. 3 days left and a lot of words to go.
Until next time….
