Getting By With A Little Help From My Friends

As an adult educator by trade and a life long learner by heart I am constantly reading up on the latest things in the writing world and discovering new ways to help myself become better at writing.

Over the last couple of weeks I attended a couple of workshops which were amazing. One on social media and the other on how established authors work their businesses. I learned so much at each of them.

One thing I have learned by being a member of a couple of writing groups is that most members are more than willing to help you in any way they can but you have to ask for the help. I love attending the meetings and learning from the speakers. Sometimes the informal learning during lunch with the group or during breaks in the workshops is even better. I have learned more than you could image from the people in my writing groups.
I had all this amazing information but for me there was still something missing. It was great to have all this information but what do I do with it? How do I apply it?

An author friend was starting a coaching practice and I asked her if she would take me on as a client. Yesterday we had our first session. It was designed for her to evaluate where I am in my writing career and what I want from it, and what I am looking to gain from our coaching relationship.

I had a few days to think about this before our initial call so I wrote out my answers. I wanted to be prepared when we spoke, ensuring we could use our time to the best advantage. Writing it down on paper made it feel more real, and now that I have told someone I feel I am more accountable to make sure I follow through.

We chatted about what I needed and what we could do to move me forward. Some of the things we are going to work on are:

1. Accountability. Oh boy, now I need to make sure I get my word count. No more procrastinating!
2. Craft – How to make my writing better. Yeah! You mean there is hope??
3. I have 2 projects I want to move forward and we will take a look at those. 2? am I insane?

All kidding aside, I came away form the call with a really good feeling and a whole lot of motivation. I was so motivated I worked the rest of the afternoon and into the evening starting to prepare for our next session and I couldn’t wait to talk about it here.

The great thing about coaching is it can be what you need when you need it. We discussed a lot of things that I would like help with and we will base the beginning of our contract on some of those items. From there we will see what we need to do next.

I can’t wait to get started.
