Genie Wishes

As writers and as humans we are always trying to do more. Our TO-DO lists grow but the hours in the day don’t. To solve this we are told we need to find the priorities and the rest is left for the “if I have time pile”. If you are like me, it’s hard to decide which items go on which lists, and then harder to decide if you can live with the results.

I’ve been trying to figure out my priority list for the last little while and what keeps happening is I spend more time worrying over what should be on the priority list than I am doing anything else. So today I decided I would ask for a Genie to grant me three wishes to get everything done. Here are the three I chose.

1. Patience: Chose one item and stick with it until it’s done. I have so many things I want to do that my mind keeps going from one to the other trying to keep them all going and getting no where on any of them. I want everything on my list to be complete and I want it all complete now. Patience they say is a virtue and I somehow I missed getting it when it was being passed out.

2. Focus: The ability to sit and focus on one thing at a time. So if I schedule 1 hour from 9-10am say, for writing – I sit from 9-10 and write, no checking social media, no making a fresh pot of coffee, no reading someone’s new release. No excuses.

3. Achievement: Finish the top three large projects on my goals list by the end of the year. If I follow through on 1 & 2 I will accomplish 3.

When I sat to write this post I thought to myself how hard can it be to choose three things I would like to have? Then I realized I’ve been lucky to have the things that would normally come first to mind already come true. I have a new dedicated office set up just the way I want it, support from family and friends, a great writing buddy who listen to my moans and complaints and supports me, and the opportunity to work with a great Coach.

My Genie list is not for material things, not that I don’t dream of the next best gadget for my office, I do, but I’ve found that most of the time they aren’t worth it. So I decided to ask for things I struggle with all the time not only in my writing. Not very interesting material for a blog post but none the less what I truly need. The truth is it’s up to me to make all my dreams come true– with maybe a little push from the Genie.
